Newport, R.I. - The Navy got its first look at the stealthy, futuristic Zumwalt destroyer Friday during the ship's first port call in Rhode Island.

The 610-foot-long warship is angled to minimize radar signatures and cost $4.4 billion. It is the most expensive destroyer ever built for the Navy.

She will be commissioned in October from Naval Station Newport en route to Baltimore and will arrive at her home port of San Diego. It was built at Bath Iron Works in Maine.

The bridge has 180-degree windows and seats for the ship's captain and executive officer. They don't notice the two gun mounts that look like cannon barrels. Zumwalt's powerful new gun system can fire 600 projectiles at targets more than 70 miles away.

In the mission center, about two dozen people sit at consoles with multiple computer screens to plan missions ranging from ground attack and air defense to anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and support for special operations forces. There is a large aircraft carrier and two small boats in the bay that can be used by special operations forces.

It looks like a much smaller ship on radar and is quieter than other ships, making it difficult to detect, track and attack.

Deputy Adm. Tom Rowden commands, trains, and equips ships in the Pacific Fleet, including the Zumwalt. Zumwalt will make a big difference, he said Friday.

Its advanced technology and capabilities allow it to perform a wide variety of defensive and offensive missions and deliver power where needed, creating tremendous excitement for the Navy, Rowden said. He said Zumwalt would be a "very stabilizing" sight for allies and partners, but a "threatening" sight for potential adversaries.

Rowden said the unique and important ability to generate hum energy could be used in unintended ways, such as testing and using lasers and directed energy weapons.

"We have the spirit of technological achievement and the embodiment of the future of the Navy, and I think we have the embodiment of Adm. Bud Zumwalt," Rowden said. "And when you combine those things and more, what you see is a huge, huge opportunity."

At Naval Station San Diego, Captain James Kirk (no joke) and about 150 men, or about half of his crew, settled down.

If the post-delivery maintenance period goes as planned, AN's "invisible" 15,000 ton destroyer will have rolled out of the factory and into service by the time we meet the $4.4 billion futuristic ship.
