sawada military latte

Sawada Military Latte - Sawada Coffee is a coffee shop in Chicago that was opened by World Champion Latte Artist Hiroshi Sawada. In 2008, Sawada became the first Asian to win the latte art world championship. Sawada Coffee was his first American coffee shop (he also opened Streamer Coffee Company in Tokyo).

When I was in Tokyo last year, I wanted to visit Streamer Coffee for the military style coffee, but never got around to it. So I was very excited when I found out there was a location in Chicago.

The cafe has a technical feel. In addition to drinks, they also carry a selection of donuts from Chicago's donut vault.

Mix & Match A: 5 Matcha Tea Cafes In Chicago

Their signature drink is the Soldier Latte, which combines Japanese green tea with vanilla syrup, espresso and cocoa powder.

This drink is so beautiful, I didn't want to spoil the latte art. It was also delicious. It's a little sweet but not too sweet and I think it's the perfect balance of matcha and espresso.

Another addition to their menu, this drink replaces matcha green tea with hojicha (charcoal-roasted green tea). I enjoyed this drink even more because I really enjoyed the flavor of the hojicha tea, it was milder and nuttier than the green tea.

Overall, we really enjoyed our coffee drinks here and this cafe was one of the highlights of our trip to Chicago. I will visit more often if this cafe is near me. Last year I stopped drinking coffee in a failed attempt to stop the voices in my head. Aside from a few trips to Starbucks, I've been caffeine-free for months. So drinking—well, breathing—the Militari Latte at Savada Coffee doesn't make me feel good. It's the signature drink of master latte artist Hiroshi Sawada, the name of the new cafe located at the back of Hogsalt Hospitality's Green Street Smoked Meats. Sawada has five cafes in Japan, but this one, located on the high ground facing Green Street behind GSSM, is his first. You can get your pours, your cortados, cappuccinos and americanos, chai and green tea lattes, but what seems to drive this place is this double espresso-matcha cocktail in a cup.

Sawada Coffee *

Sawada is often described as a sort of latte Jedi in terms of looks and technique. I can only imagine how difficult this intricate camouflage design – meant to evoke a war symbol – would be to replicate in human hands. Here's how I am:

But if you think about it in terms of ice cream - no two Latte Ko's are alike - it's really nice. And it was delicious, a bittersweet note of green tea floating in the foam just above the deep espresso, whose bitter side was softened by the vanilla syrup ($5.50). However, it is a great exercise if you are not used to it. I was shaking like a Hitachi Magic Wand.

All good coffee shops should offer drinks for those emergencies, and Sawada offers half-and-half "steamer" drinks—like lattes, with coffee drinks. Whiskey, almond liqueur, honey and orange peel brought me back down to earth ($7).

Fans of world-famous Savada coffee are in for a treat: Hogsalt Hospitality has quietly opened a sister location in River North, called Savada Matcha.

A bright new spot is a collaboration with Japanese barista extraordinaire Hiroshi Sawada, with a vibe that's even better than his West Loop counterpart. While West Loop is modern, professional and spacious, Savada Matcha is a contemporary space with low couches and window seats. (Apparently, that will be the lounge for Hogsalt's radio Anaga izakaya, which is behind some curtains and is now open daily.)

While the Instagram-famous Matcha-based Militari Latte, a green tea and espresso drink, is a signature offering, don't miss the Black Camo Latte ($5.95). Unlike the strong, grassy matcha, the Black Camo Latte uses hojicha tea, a charcoal-roasted green tea, with an espresso base. While the Militari Latte is well balanced between grassy tea, earthier espresso and a light hint of vanilla, the Black Camo is nuttier and sweeter, the tea aroma beckons the Neck, the silky foam.

Elsewhere on the menu, you'll find other drinks by the cup, like matcha cortado ($4) and teas. Coffee is limited to espresso drinks; there is no copyright here. If you're looking for a snack, colorful macarons are available, as well as matcha donuts from another Hogsalt facility, the Donut Vault.

Fab Happenings: Top 5 Coffee Shops In Chicago

If you can stretch out the day to sit down and enjoy a cup of java, there's no better place than this little spot in the shade of the Merchandise Mart. , it can be said that it is a well-researched topic. Is there anything better than catching up with a friend over a nice cup of espresso? Maybe we should meet at a fancy coffee shop for the new Sequins & Stripes Facebook group… I want to get something done and maybe I want food, which is five lattes (and places) I visit Chicago often:

For a classic latte: Dollop Coffee Co. Dollop has a variety of shops, each equally fun and attractive. They serve Metropolis coffee and homemade pastries, as well as my latte on Sundays. I especially love their honey cinnamon latte, which is steamed milk and espresso served with a little honey and a little cinnamon - great with soy!

For a little taste: Heritage General Store I know I've talked about Heritage before in my Lincoln Park neighborhood guide, but there's a reason I keep coming back here. The place is cozy and comfortable and perfect for a drink while strolling through Lincoln Park. The lavender latte is a classic, but don't forget seasonal syrups like vanilla, peppermint and hazelnut.

Sawada Military Latte

You may have seen Savada's popular Military Latteon on social media, which is a blend of matcha, sweet vanilla syrup, cocoa powder, and espresso. I went in thinking it was too much mixing, but I found the coffee to be simple, not too sweet, and definitely worth a try. (But would you expect anything less from the West Loop?)

Art + Science Cafe Military Latte (drink Of The Week)

Dark Matter Coffee Some very close friends live in a Ukrainian village, and a walk around the neighborhood means stopping at the Star Lounge Dark Matter coffee shop. Dark Matter is one of those places where coffee is a way of life, so you can be sure that their iced latte is one of the best. And I know this isn't *technically* a latte, but Maya's Dark Matter Iced Mocha is one of the tastiest things I've had in Chicago.

C.C. Ferns Between vintage vibes and elegant coffee drinks, C.C. it's one of those places where you'll want to bring a newspaper, sit on the couch and kick back for a while. At least that's what all the modern people out there do—there's no shame in stopping by for a chai latte or a classic from the Donut Vault.

Any other Chicago lattes I should add to the list? I hope you're reading this while you're sipping your coffee somewhere - happy Saturday!
