"Stroke survivors see a window of unassisted healing in which some brain function returns naturally," Cashman said. But after about six months, the natural healing process seemed to slow down and further rehabilitation depended on his investment in therapy.

"I was at this plateau," he said, so he reached out to the military's first Armed Forces Wellness Center, which opened last year at Fort Belvoir. "Through my work...I have benefited from effective patient education at the wellness center, developed specific strategies for building mindfulness skills, and most valuable to me, enthusiastic encouragement."

On May 18, Fort Belvoir Cashman, the Department of Defense, celebrated the importance of wellness with the grand opening of a center that serves veterans as well as civilians and their family members.

The new independent center previously operated from a room inside the hospital on the first floor. The Army has 31 such facilities, but this is the first to serve all branches.

"This Armed Forces Health Center is a tremendous collaborative achievement in a resource-constrained environment," said Renee Johnson, health promotion officer for the Army Community Health Center, Military District of Washington and National Capital Region. "They can help with meal planning, create a safe plan for weight loss or gain, muscle mass or core strength. We know injuries are a serious issue in all forces and these teammates have the experience and skills to help people create a great fitness plan tailored to the individual."

The center's director, Nicole Leth, said the cozy atmosphere and bright, colorful decorations were designed to contrast with the clinical setting.

"When you're working on health and wellness goals, it's very personal — it's a very intimate thing to come to you and talk about the obstacles you're facing and the challenges you're facing," said Lt. “You have to feel comfortable and at home in a place like this to really dive deep. This is where we do the hard work, but that's how we achieve lasting, lifelong change around health and well-being."

During the ceremony, Major General. Omar Jones, commander of the Joint Task Force and Military District of Washington's National Capital Region, said locating the center at Fort Belvoir is convenient because the facility has 150 units serving all services. .

"It's a first for the Department of Defense to call it the Armed Forces Welfare Center," Jones said. "It's a big deal and it's good for the community."

Cashman said he was grateful to have access to the resource. "I have a lot of work to do before I achieve all my recovery goals, but I am confident that I am on the right track and have the support of a first-class team." The HQC Fitness Center is now open from 5:30am. 5:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday and 5:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Due to social distancing restrictions, no more than 25 customers at a time. Lockers and shower rooms are open for use, but they are limited to seven people at a time. Per CDC guidelines, personal hair dryers are not allowed in the facility.

The HQC Fitness Center is a 10,000 square foot facility with locker rooms, saunas and state-of-the-art fitness equipment. This facility is managed by certified and dedicated fitness professionals. The center offers a wide range of strength and cardio equipment with a dedicated active fitness area.

Group Exercise & Fitness Classes

Recreational activities include racquetball, basketball, tennis, wallball and horseshoes. The outdoor bike program is free use of mountain and road bikes with helmets. There is a large group gym with a variety of free classes per week. For more information and to order:
