Savannah Military Museum - The Eighth Air Force Museum is one of the best museums in the Savannah area. It is located in Pooler, near the airport, about 11 miles from downtown Savannah.
This military and aviation history museum focuses on the history of the Eighth Air Force, the largest air force deployed in the United States Army.

The "Mighty Eighth" Air Force, best known for its role in World War II, was formed in 1944 from the VIII Bomber, Fighter and Air Support Divisions. During the remainder of World War II, the Eighth Air Army played an important role in bombing and anti-aircraft operations in Europe, striking enemy forces in northern Europe from air bases in England.

Exhibits at the Air Force Museum include many historic aircraft, World War II aviation experience reenactments, World War II history, and the history of the eight Air Forces to date.
Exhibits and Films Many of the exhibits—on World War I Germany, the Battle of Britain, and the attack on Pearl Harbor—discuss the events leading up to America's entry into World War II. Other exhibits detail World War II, the Eighth Air Force and the men who served in it, as well as information about the African-American Tuskegee Airlift; "Fly Girls" (US Air Force pilots); and the role of the 8th Air Force to the present day.
Other exhibits, some interactive, trace elements of the experience of being in the air, including Molesworth Airfield in England, where the soldiers were based; bombing; and landing on enemy territory.
Airplanes Many historical military aircraft are on display in the museum. Next to the parking lot - F-4C Phantom and MiG-17A named after Mikayan-Gurevich of Russian assembly; in the memorial garden behind the museum is a B-47 Stratojet. Inside are the B-17 City of Savannah Flying Fortress and Boeing-Stearman PT Kaydet, as well as models of other military aircraft and vehicles.

Memorial Gardens The gardens, monuments and pool at the rear of the museum commemorate members of the Eighth Air Force. PRESS RELEASE - Pooler, GA. — Tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., the Eighth Air Force Museum will show a fully restored Boeing B-17G "City of Savannah" glider. This was achieved after more than six years of painstaking restoration work by museum volunteers since the aircraft was purchased by the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in 2009. The Jan. 28 dedication is no coincidence because it marks the 73rd anniversary of the launch of the Eighth Air Force in World War II at Savannah, Georgia. Memorial Day will include a public dedication ceremony with speakers and military dignitaries, including Maj. Gen. Scott A. Vander Hamm, the current commander of the Air Force. Along with honoring the many people who made the rebuild possible, World War II veterans will be honored, including many who served with the B-17. It is believed that members of the workers' family worked in the first town, "Savannah City". A light reception will follow the dedication service.
The "City of Savannah" has a long history, named after brave soldiers and the city where the mighty eight of the Air Force appeared. The restoration required more than 60,000 hours of work from a volunteer team of more than 140. Museum volunteers worked with other volunteers, interns, researchers, designers and educators representing companies and schools such as Gulfstream Aerospace, Chroma Corporation, LMI, Savannah Tech and others. . When the aircraft is complete, it will be in its original combat condition with radios and machine guns in working order and available for display. In downtown Savannah, the Naval Museum displays a model of the USS Savannah CL42 in its collection. This ship received three battle stars in World War II. On the morning of September 11, 1943, it was attacked by German bombers at the Battle of Salerno, Italy. As a result of the explosion, about 200 policemen and sailors were killed.
